Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to use a friend’s cottage up in Prince Edward County. It was the perfect Ontario family getaway. I had never been to this part of Ontario and although it was a long 5 hour drive (with stopping because 4 kids under 4)it was so worth it.
We stayed at Cherry Beach Resort which is in a little town called Picton. The resort itself is very spacious with a huge salt water pool, splash pad, tennis courts, and playground. Everything looked new and very clean, and I always saw staff working on cleaning the public areas. There was also a wagon taking kids for rides with their mascot, and live music by the pool.
It is right on the beach where there is a 1200 foot beach front to share so we didn’t feel cramped. They have a big water trampoline out there and also paddle boards, and kayaks to use free of charge. There is also a free kids club, which we didn’t used because we were only there for the weekend and were looking to spend quality family time. However we saw it being run and the teens running it did a great job, the kids looked like they were having a blast.
The little cottage was perfect. it had 2 bedrooms one with a queen bed, and the other with 2 bunk beds with doubles on the bottom. There was also a pull out couch in the living area. Full kitchen amenities, and a nice deck area outside to relax and eat our meals. We had a blast, it was quiet and peaceful, but still lots to do to keep the kids busy.
One of our days there we spent at Sandbanks provincial park. It was hard to believe that this lake was lake Ontario! There are 3 beach areas in the Provincial Park with lots of hiking and areas to camp as well. We choose Dunes Beach and it was really cool to see all these huge sand dunes right by the lake and the kids loved it because they could walk out quite a ways to play in the water because it was very shallow.
We had a blast there! If you have never been to Sandbanks you definitely need to put it on your bucket list. We noticed there was a large number of visitors from Quebec in this area, so if you are french this looked like a popular tourist destination to be at!
The little town of Picton has 3 grocery stores, a large LCBO and lots of beautiful historical homes. We didn’t have time to check out any restaurants but it looks like they had lots of great ones. We loved our little getaway. The resort we stayed at does private rentals or park rentals. To check out the exact one we stayed at you can find info on facebook here, the owners keep the cottage in great condition and it had everything we needed, pots and pans, dishes, movies, and toys for the kids. Outside had a picnic table, kids picnic table, and an outdoor couch set under a gazebo with an outdoor heater for cooler evenings, it was perfect! We loved our time there, and if you are looking for a little getaway in Ontario, you should definitely check it out!
